Google Acknowledges Vulnerability in Millions of Android Devices; Promises Fix

Millions of Android smartphones and tablets are vulnerable to security attacks, Google has warned. The vulnerability, if exploited, gives an app unfettered root access, circumventing various Android security layers. The Mountain View-based company has made available a patch to OEMs, and says it is currently working on a fix for the Nexus lineup.

Security researchers spotted an app in the Google Play, Android's marquee app store, which tries to leverage the vulnerability. Android inherited the flaw from Linux years ago. Interestingly, Linux developers fixed the bug in 2014, and it was later on flagged as a vulnerability - identified as CVE-2015-1805 - early last year.

The vulnerability is present in all Android releases that are based on Linux kernel version 3.4, or 3.10, or 3.14. Android versions based on Linux kernel 3.18 or higher aren't affected, Google assures. Most Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based devices run on kinux Kernel v3.18, however, different OEMs often use different Linux kernel versions - thus, it is hard to correlate Android version with kernel version.

Google acknowledged the existence of the vulnerability in an advisory it sent last week. "An elevation of privilege vulnerability in the kernel could enable a local malicious application to execute arbitrary code in the kernel. This issue is rated as a critical severity due to the possibility of a local permanent device compromise and the device would possibly need to be repaired by re-flashing the operating system," the note reads.

Google didn't disclose the name of the app, though it noted that the offending app was available from Google Play as well as third-party sources, and Nexus 6 and Nexus 5 smartphones were affected. It also noted that it has published the patches for the flaw with OEMs, and also published them to the Android Open Source Project. It is up to manufacturers now how long they take before pushing the updates to their respective devices.

Even the majestic Amazon Cloud couldn’t handle this onslaught of traffic, and the website crashed.

Social media is right now ignited with the news and reports of Freedom 251, as thousands and thousands of tech enthusiast attempted to book a unit of this new disruption in tech world.

We attempt to analyse logically, the truth behind Freedom 251, and try to decode whether its a scam or its a genuine offering from a new hotshot company which is attempting something never tried before?





We will first give them benefit of doubt, and present two reasons which prove that its not a scam:

Two Reasons it is NOT a Scam

a) Political leaders have launched this product
At a glittering event, veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi launched this handset in Delhi. Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar was also expected to attend this event, but he failed to turn up.

b) Ownership Is Clear


The company’s owners are not hiding and have presented themselves to be scrutinized. Here is the Facebook profile of the founder Mohit Goel, who goes by the name ‘CuteMohit’; besides, all the founders of this company have come out in the open in today’s full page ad on TOI and mentioned that the handsets would be delivered in June.

Four Reasons IT IS a Scam

a) The actual product is a shady rebranded ripoff:
Sample unit of Freedom 251 was reviewed by Hindustan Times, and they found that it’s a shady, rebranded ripoff of a smartphone sold by a company named Adcom, which is a Delhi based importer of gadgets and electronic products. And, Marketing Manager of Adcom has said, “We have no idea that our branding is being used on the Freedom 251.. We will look into this.”

Adcom A400, the handset which is being allegedly rebranded (without their permission) was launched 2 years ago. Hence, it can be a possibility that Ringing Bells are now reselling the old stock at lower price.

The most hilarious thing is that, the logo of Adcom is hidden by a whitener. No genuine company selling a smartphone shall do that.. Never!



Interestingly, the handset which has been rebranded is sold for Rs 4000 by Adcom. How will a new company rebrand it and sell the same for Rs 251? A huge red flag for scam alert here.

b) Promises Broken:
As per the specifications mentioned in their website, this smartphone will be pre-loaded with several apps such as Swatch Bharat, Women Safety App, Facebook, Whatsapp and more. But the review unit didn’t had any such app. Besides, the actual handset received by HT is entirely different from the handset which is being shown on their website and the full page ads in newspapers.



Infact, the icons & browser seems a direct copy of iOS icons and Safari browser.

c) Unrealistic/Infeasible Pricing:
Mobile Industry Body Indian Cellular Association (ICA) has written to Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, asking him to look into this matter, as there is no way any company can sell such a handset below Rs 2700, even after considering all discount factors.

ICA President said, “For your kind information, the bill of material (BOM) value for a product like this when sourced from the cheapest supply chain cost approximately USD 40 (Rs 2,700).”

Considering that this handset feature 4-inch display, Qualcomm 1.3-GHz quad-core processor and 1 GB RAM; the individual cost of each component itself will be far more than Rs 251.

d) Not Govt. Approved:
Ringing Bell, the parent company behind the scintillating offer is not listed under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which means that they are not certified to sell any product in India. This is a major red flag alert, which indicates that it’s a scam. And, there are no address mentioned on their website; the copy which they have written describing the advantages and features are all amateurish, and the Tweets they are sending are unprofessional to say the least.

Only time will tell about the truth, which would be revealed on June 30th, when Ringing Bells will deliver the first batch of their Freedom 251 handsets.

নয়াদিল্লি: ভারতের বাজারে ভূমিকম্পের আগাম আভাস দেওয়ার ক্ষমতাসম্পন্ন যন্ত্র নিয়ে এল জার্মানির একটি কোম্পানি। এই যন্ত্র সঙ্কেত দিলে কম্পনের আঁচ পেয়ে আগেভাগেই নিরাপদ জায়গায় সরে যাওয়া সম্ভব হবে বলে দাবি তাদের। সেটি বসাতে হবে বাড়িতে।

ইলেকট্রনিক্স জিএমবিএইচ নামে কোম্পানির এমডি জুরগেন প্রিজবায়লাক বলেছেন, আগাম ভূকম্পন সতর্কতা ও নিরাপত্তা সিস্টেম বসাতে হবে বাড়ির ভিতরে। সেটি কম্পনের প্রাথমিক তরঙ্গ চিহ্নিত করে সতর্ক করে দেবে। ভূমিকম্পের সময় পি অর্থাত প্রাথমিক তরঙ্গ প্রবাহিত হয় খুব মৃদু গতিতে। তারপরই আসে সেকেন্ডারি তরঙ্গ।

তিনি এও বলেছেন, বর্তমানে যে প্রযুক্তি আছে, তা কোনও ভূমিকম্পের প্রাথমিক তরঙ্গকে চিহ্নিত করতে পারে। এবং কয়েক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যেই প্রাণ ও সম্পত্তি রক্ষা করতে নেমে পড়া যাবে।

প্রিজবায়লাকের দাবি, তাঁদের যন্ত্রটি দ্বিতীয় কম্পনতরঙ্গ বাড়িঘর কাঁপিয়ে দেওয়ার ৭০ সেকেন্ড আগেই সতর্কবার্তা দেবে। ফলে লোকজন বাড়ির বাইরে বেরিয়ে আসার জন্য বেশি সময় পাবেন।

মানুষের অস্তিত্বই সঙ্কটে, হুঁশিয়ারি হকিংয়ের

বসবাসের অযোগ্য হয়ে উঠেছে এই পৃথিবী। খেতে ফসল নেই। শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস নেওয়ার উপযুক্ত হাওয়া নেই। তাই ভিন্‌ গ্রহে ‘উপনিবেশ’ গড়ার খোঁজে পৃথিবী ছেড়ে পাড়ি দিয়েছিল এক দল নভশ্চর। খুঁজেও পেয়েছিল। বছরখানেক আগে মুক্তি পাওয়া ক্রিস্টোফার নোলান পরিচালিত ‘ইন্টারস্টেলার’ ছবিটি দর্শককে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল এ রকমই এক কল্পবিজ্ঞানের জগতে।

পৃথিবীর বাইরে ঘর বাধার স্বপ্ন মানুষের অনেক দিনের। সেই স্বপ্নকে সত্যি করে তুলতে মহাকাশে ফোটাচ্ছে ফুলও। কিন্তু একই সঙ্গে চলছে উল্টো দৌড়। নানা ভাবে বিপন্ন করে তোলা হচ্ছে পৃথিবীকে। এই পথ থেকে সরে না এলে ভিন্গ্রহে বসত গড়ার আগেই হয়তো পৃথিবীতে মুছে যাবে মানুষের অস্তিত্ব, হুঁশিয়ার করলেন বিজ্ঞানী স্টিফেন হকিং। আজ বিবিসির ‘রিথ বক্তৃতা’ দেওয়ার আগে তিনি মনে করিয়ে দিলেন, ‘‘অন্য কোনও গ্রহে উপনিবেশ গড়ে তুলতে অন্তত একশো বছর লেগে যাবে। তত দিন অন্তত পৃথিবীটাকে বাসযোগ্য করে রাখি আমরা।’’ কী ভাবে তা সম্ভব, তার দাওয়াইও দিলেন তিনি। হকিংয়ের কথায়, ‘‘পৃথিবীর বিপদগুলিকে চিনে নিয়ে তাতে লাগাম টানতে হবে।’’

বিপদগুলি কী?

পরমাণু যুদ্ধ, পরিবেশ দূষণ, উষ্ণায়ন, জিন বদলানো ভাইরাস— তালিকাটি দীর্ঘ। হকিংয়ের বক্তব্য, একের পর এক দেশ তাদের অস্ত্রভাণ্ডারে মজুত করছে পরমাণু বোমা। বেহিসেবি জীবনযাপনের জন্য বেড়ে চলেছে জ্বালানি খরচ। যা বিষ ছড়াচ্ছে পরিবেশে। উন্নত দেশগুলির গবেষণাগারে গোপনে হয়ে চলেছে একের পর এক পরীক্ষা, রাসায়নিক বিক্রিয়া। যা জন্ম দিচ্ছে কালান্তক ভাইরাসের। আর এই সবই ছায়া ফেলছে মানবজাতির আয়ুতে।

তাহলে মানবজাতিকে এর থেকে বাঁচানোর উপায়? বিজ্ঞানী হিসেবেই তিনি  সাবধান করে দিয়েছেন বি়জ্ঞান গবেষণার ফলে ঘনিয়ে আসা সর্বনাশ নিয়ে। হকিংয়ের বক্তব্য, বি়জ্ঞান গবেষণাকে মুক্ত করতে হবে। সবার অগোচরে আর গবেষণা নয় নয়, পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা বা গবেষণা যা চলছে, তা জানাতে হবে সকলকে। বোঝাতে হবে মানুষকে।

কৃত্রিম ভাইরাস, বুদ্ধিমান কম্পিউটার কিংবা বিশ্ব উষ্ণায়ন যে সেই সব বিপদের নমুনা, তা তিনি বলে আসছেন দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই। আজও তিনি বলেন, ‘‘এক বছরের মাপকাঠিতে হয়তো এই বিপদের মাত্রা হিসেব করা যাবে না। কিন্তু একসঙ্গে অনেকগুলো বছর— হাজার কিংবা দশ হাজার বছরে— বিপদ প্রায় নিশ্চিত। তার আগে যদি মানুষ অন্য কোনও গ্রহে উপনিবেশ গড়ে তুলতে পারে, চলে যেতে পারে অন্য কোনও নক্ষত্রের আশপাশে, তা হলে হয়তো পৃথিবীতে সর্বনাশ ঘনিয়ে এলেও মহাবিশ্ব থেকে মানুষ নিশ্চিহ্ন হবে না।’’

তবে এখনই আস্থা হারাচ্ছেন না কেমব্রিজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এই বিজ্ঞানী। এক দিকে যেমন তিনি দেখতে পাচ্ছেন, পৃথিবীর বিকল্প না খুঁজে পেলে নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে যাবে মানুষ, তেমনি তাঁর বিশ্বাস, মানুষই পারবে এই বিপদ নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে। তাই যাঁরা বি়জ্ঞানী হতে চান, তাঁদের জন্য হকিংয়ের পরামর্শ, গবেষণা কোন পথে এগিয়ে চলেছে তা জনসাধারণকে জানানোর দায়িত্ব তাঁদেরই নিতে হবে। এটাও দেখতে হবে যে, গবেষণার অগ্রগতি যেন ঠিক পথে এগোয়। গণতান্ত্রিক সমাজ ব্যবস্থায় যদি সকলের বিজ্ঞান সম্পর্কে সাধারণ ধারণা থাকে তবেই তা সম্ভব।

বিজ্ঞানীদের হকিংয়ের তাই পরামর্শ, ‘‘জনগণকে সোজা ভাষায় জানান, আপনি কী করতে চাইছেন, কে জানে, এর ফলে আপনিই হয়তো ভাল করে চিনবেন নিজেকে।’’

সৌরমণ্ডলের বুক কাঁপিয়ে তীব্র গতিতে ধেয়ে আসছে দানব তারা

ধ্বংসের দিন কি কড়া নাড়ছে?
কোনও ভয়ঙ্কর দুর্যোগের দিন কি আমাদের দোড়গোড়ায় এসে গিয়েছে?
যে দিন বিশাল কোনও মহাজাগতিক বস্তুর আচমকা ধাক্কায় টালমাটাল হয়ে যাবে আমাদের সৌরমণ্ডল? ছিটকে এই গ্যালাক্সি থেকে বের করে দিতে পারে অন্যান্য তারা বা মহাজাগতিক বস্তুকে।
থরথরিয়ে কেঁপে উঠবে আমাদের এই সৌর পরিবার?
সে দিন নিমেষে উধাও হয়ে যাবে আমাদের এই বাসযোগ্য গ্রহের বায়ুমণ্ডল। আর শ্বাস-বায়ু থাকবে না বলে পৃথিবীতে প্রাণের অস্তিত্ব বজায় রাখাটা রীতিমতো অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়বে। বদলে যাবে এই সৌর পরিবারের সবক’টি গ্রহের কক্ষপথ। বদলে যাবে দিন-রাত আর বছরের হিসেব। বদলে যাবে তাদের ঋতু আর বায়ুমণ্ডল। গোটা সৌরমণ্ডলে শুরু হয়ে যাবে অসম্ভব উথালপাতাল।
একেবারেই হালে নাসার স্পিৎজার স্পেস টেলিস্কোপ (এসএসটি) ও ওয়াইড-ফিল্ড ইনফ্রা-রেড সার্ভে এক্সপ্লোরার (ওয়াইজ) যে তথ্য ও ছবি পাঠিয়েছে, তাতে সেই আশঙ্কা রীতিমতো জোরদার হয়ে উঠেছে। নাসা জানাচ্ছে, ব্রহ্মাণ্ডে আমাদের ঠিকানা- ‘মিল্কি ওয়ে গ্যালাক্সি’তে যে কোনও সময়ে বড় ধরনের দুর্ঘটনা ঘটে যেতে পারে। আমাদের এই গ্যালাক্সিতেই অসম্ভব ঝোড়ো গতিতে ছুটে আসছে একটি দানবের চেহারার মতো তারা। যার নাম- ‘জিটা ওফিউচি’ বা ‘জিটা ওফ’। যাকে বলে ‘সুপারসোনিক গতি’। আমাদের গ্যালাক্সিতে এর আগে এত জোরে কোনও তারাকে ছুটতে দেখা যায়নি। কত জোরে, জানেন? ঘণ্টায় ৫৪ হাজার মাইল বা সেকেন্ডে ২৪ হাজার কিলোমিটার। অত জোরে ছুটতে গিয়ে সে যাকে বলে, লাথি মেরে হটিয়ে দিচ্ছে সামনে পড়ে থাকা অন্যান্য তারা, মহাজাগতিক বস্তু, গ্যাস বা ধুলোবালিকে। তার ছোটার পথের সামনে যাকে পাচ্ছে, তাকেই ফুৎকারে উ়ড়িয়ে দিচ্ছে আমাদের সূর্যের চেয়ে অনেক গুণ ভারী ওই তারা ‘জিটা ওফিউচি’। সমুদ্রে ঝোড়ো গতিতে ছোটার সময়ে যে ভাবে জলকে তুড়ি মেরেই সরিয়ে দেয় সর্বাধুনিক জাহাজ। গত সপ্তাহে সংশ্লিষ্ট গবেষণাপত্রটি পেশ করা হয়েছে ফ্লোরিডার কিসিমিতে, আমেরিকান অ্যাস্ট্রোনমিক্যাল সোসাইটির মাসিক সম্মেলনে। গবেষকদলের নেতৃত্বে রয়েছেন মার্কিন মুলুকের উইয়োমিং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানী উইলিয়াম চিক।
কোনও যুদ্ধবিমান খুব নীচু দিয়ে উড়ে যাওয়ার সময় যেমন আমাদের বাড়ি-ঘরদোরের জানলা-দরজার কাচের শার্সি ঝনঝন করে ওঠে, তাতে চিড় ধরে আর পরে তা চুরচুর করে ভেঙে যায়, ঠিক তেমনি ভাবেই আমাদের গ্যালাক্সিতে ওই অসম্ভব ভারী তারার ‘সুপারসোনিক গতি’-র জন্য গোটা সৌরমণ্ডলের থরথরিয়ে কেঁপে ওঠার জোর আশঙ্কা দেখা দিয়েছে। এই ঘটনাকে বলে, ‘বাও শক’। একটা অসম্ভব জোরালো তরঙ্গের অসম্ভব রকমের জোরালো ধাক্কা। যার চেহারাটা দেখতে অনেকটা ধনুকের মতো হয় বলে ওই ধাক্কার নাম দেওয়া হয়েছে ‘বাও শক’।
একেবারেই হালে নাসার নজরে পড়া ওই অভিনব ঘটনা সম্পর্কে কী বলছেন বিশিষ্ট জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানীরা?
কলকাতার সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ বোস ন্যাশনাল সেন্টার ফর বেসিক সায়েন্সেসের সিনিয়র প্রফেসর, আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতিসম্পন্ন জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানী সন্দীপ চক্রবর্তী জানাচ্ছেন, ‘‘আমাদের গ্যালাক্সিতে এর আগে কোনও তারাকে এত জোরে ছুটতে দেখা যায়নি। আমাদের সূর্যও ছুটছে। কিন্তু তার গতি ‘জিটা ওফিউচি’-র কাছে একেবারেই নস্যি। ওই অসম্ভব জোরে ছোটার জন্য সে প্রচণ্ড শক্তিশালী তরঙ্গের জন্ম দিচ্ছে এই গ্যালাক্সিতে। যা অবলোহিত রশ্মির চেহারায় ধরা পড়ছে। সেই তরঙ্গ সামনে থাকা কণার স্রোত, গ্যাস তারা, ধুলোবালি আর অন্যান্য মহাজাগতিক বস্তুকে সজোরে ঠেলে সরিয়ে দিচ্ছে। সরিয়ে দিতে গিয়ে সেগুলোকে অসম্ভব গরম করে দিচ্ছে। যে ভাবে কোনও রাস্তার ক্রসিংয়ে ‘গ্রিন সিগন্যাল’ থাকলেও হঠাৎ কোনও গাড়ি ব্রেক চাপলে, তার পিছনের গাড়িগুলো এসে তার পিছনে একের পর এক ধাক্কা মারে, ঠিক তেমনি ভাবেই ওই তরঙ্গ এসে ধাক্কা মারতে পারে আমাদের সৌরমণ্ডলকে। অসম্ভব জোরালো সেই ধাক্কাটা। ধাক্কার জোরের ওপরেই নির্ভর করছে, তা কতটা টালমাটাল করে দেবে আমাদের সৌরমণ্ডল। তবে এত জোরালো তরঙ্গের একটা প্রভাব তো আমাদের গ্যালাক্সির সর্বত্রই পড়ার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। তাতে এই সৌরমণ্ডলের অনেক কিছুই বদলে যেতে পারে। বদলে যেতে পারে এই সৌর পরিবারের সবক’টি গ্রহের কক্ষপথ। বদলাতে পারে তাদের দিন-রাত আর বছরের হিসেব। বদলে যেতে পারে তাদের ঋতু আর বায়ুমণ্ডল। গোটা সৌরমণ্ডলে শুরু হয়ে যেতে পারে অসম্ভব উথালপাতাল। তবে সেই তরঙ্গের রেশ ফুরিয়ে গেলে আবার সব কিছু ফিরে আসতে পারে স্বাভাবিক অবস্থায়।’’
বেঙ্গালুরুর রামন রিসার্চ ইনস্টিটিউটের (আরআরআই) প্রফেসর, ভারতে গ্যালাক্সি-গবেষণার অন্যতম জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানী বিমান নাথ জানাচ্ছেন, ‘‘একটা ঘটনা আমাদের খুবই ভাবিয়ে তুলেছে। তা হল, কেন এত হন্তদন্ত হয়ে, এত জোরে ছুটছে আমাদের গ্যালাক্সির অন্য তারাগুলো? কেন সুপারসোনিক গতিতে ছুটছে ‘জিটা ওফিউচি’? তা কি গ্যালাক্সি থেকে বেরিয়ে যাওয়ার মুখে? গেলে, কোথায় তাদের গন্তব্য, এমন অনেক প্রশ্নেরই সদুত্তর মেলেনি এখনও।’’
