Auto Sizing Photos to Fit Post Area in Blogger

One question I am asked often is from Blogger users wondering how to make their photos fit the width of their post area. If you’ve been using Blogger for a little while, you are no stranger to the image size options once you upload your photos. They currently offer Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large and Original. Whichever option you choose determines how your photo will be displayed. If you are not yet familiar with these options, try adding an image to your post and then click on that photo in the editor. You will then see the image size options below the photo.

Depending on the width of your content area, the Extra Large size tends to work well, but what if you want it just a bit larger, or just a bit smaller? The standard Extra Large photo size is 640px wide. You can adjust this easily with a little CSS magic.

First, stop choosing image sizes and stick with the Original photo size. The Original size does not compress or resize your images, so I wouldn’t recommend uploading HUGE photos straight from your digital camera without resizing them manually first. Otherwise you’re going to be uploading rather large file sizes which drastically slows down your blog’s loading time. (Photos from a DSLR are usually about 1-4MB in size… each!)

Generally I resize all of my photos to 700px wide during my editing sessions. 700px is a nice size because you can shrink it a little bit in Blogger without losing quality, and the file size is not too large. If your post area is larger than 700px, resize your photos accordingly. However, think about the future of your blog. What if one day you might want even larger photos shown at about 800px wide? Resizing your photos larger than your post area can prove to make life easier down the line. You can’t upscale your photos later without sacrificing quality, but you can always shrink them.
You can use any photo editing program to scale and compress your photos. I strongly recommend getting your hands on Photoshop because it will definitely prove its value throughout your blogging career. If you aren’t into editing your photos on your computer, try setting your camera settings to the “small” image size when snapping your pictures. I would only suggest this as a last resort though.
Once you’ve got your photos resized, add them to your post. Choose the Original size option. Now, obviously if your photos are larger than your post area, they are going to poke out of bounds, so let’s fix that and make them fit exactly.
In Blogger, go to Template > Customize. In the Template Editor choose Advanced and then CSS. Here is where you will add the following CSS code. Remember to change the value with the width of your actual post area. The width should be smaller than your actual photo, not larger.

.post-body img {
max-width:660px;
max-height:auto;
}

What’s great about doing it this way? Say you want to change your blog design around a little bit in the future and your post area width changes a little. Instead of changing each image on past posts, all you would need to do is update the CSS code with the new image width and everything will fit properly… past posts and new ones.
Let’s add to that a little to get rid of the default border and shadow around your photos:

.post-body img {
max-width:660px;
max-height:auto;
box-shadow:none;
border:none;
}

Those two lines get rid of the outlines and give your posts a much cleaner look.
I hope this post helped you! Comments and feedback are always welcome below!

Tips for Using Facebook To Boost Your Ecommerce Store

With more than 1.5 billion registered users, a figure continuously rising, Facebook is a social networking powerhouse. It’s worth more than the annual output of many countries and has users from all across the globe. The amount of data Facebook has, and the detail with which people willingly share information about them on Facebook, makes it any marketer’s dream platform. Just look at some of these stats.

  • Facebook has more than 1.5 billion registered users.
  • More than 699 million people log in to Facebook every day.
  • An average person spends around 15 hours and 33 minutes on Facebook every month. This makes it a total of 700 billion minutes globally.
  • More than 2.5 million websites have integrated with Facebook.
Currently there are thousands of Facebook pages where people are selling products directly to their fans. While it’s not always the best strategy to depend completely on Facebook for ecommerce sales, it certainly can be a part of your broader ecommerce plan.
If you have an ecommerce website or an online store, you can use the power of Facebook to reach your target customers much more effectively and drive them to your online store and boost sales.
Here are a few tips for using Facebook to strengthen your ecommerce store.

1. Content is the King – Even on Facebook

Quality content is the king everywhere. But the kind of content that resonates with Facebook users is very different from blog content or articles. Here, if you write 1000 word status updates, very few of your fans will have the patience to read till the end.
Facebook users like short, catchy, visually appealing and action oriented posts created in a fun way. Above all your posts should provide users value. Demonstrate your knowledge about your niche and products in your status updates.
Also, don’t be obsessed with your own product images, links and blog posts all the time. Regularly share stuff from other blogs and websites that your fans may find useful (not from your competitor’s site, of course).

2. Optimize Your Store for Facebook Engagement

Your ecommerce store should also be optimized for maximum Facebook engagement (Likes, Comments, Shares). You can do that in a number of ways. Offer sign up via Facebook. Make sure your store’s product pages have clearly visible social media sharing widgets. Add the Facebook comments widget to your product pages so that the user comments are visible on their Facebook profiles as well. Add a small statement below the product images encouraging users to share on Facebook.
These are basic things but many ecommerce stores don’t have them in place because of which they fail to take advantage of Facebook.

3. Use Engaging Descriptions and Smart Calls To Action

Whenever you add new products to your store, you’d most likely share them on your Facebook page. When you do that, make sure you add an engaging 1-2 line description with your links. Engaging or catchy descriptions drive more clicks as compared to simple link shares.
Use high engagement words in your posts. Research shows that status updates that include the words Facebook, Why, Most, World, How, Health, Bill, Big, Says and Best get most engagement and shares. Similarly,
  • Posts with less than 80 characters attract 23% more engagement.
  • Using emoticons increases comments by 33%.
  • Question posts get 100% more comments.
  • Quotes get 26% more Likes and 19% more shares.
Also, make your descriptions action oriented and add clear calls to action with them. Facebook recently introduced the “Add Call to Action” option with status updates. Always use it with your status updates and link shares.

4. Boost Sales With Contests, Deals and Special Offers

Facebook users love contests and discount deals. Running competitions is found to be the most effective engagement technique for ecommerce stores. Almost 35% users “Like” Facebook pages to participate in contests. So give them what they want. Ask questions and use “Like for Yes, Comment for No” type techniques for feedback. These small fun activities can boost your engagement significantly.

5. Focus on High Quality Visual Content

I’ve already mentioned the importance of content, but visual content deserves a separate mention. Facebook users love visual content like images, info graphics, videos, memes etc. Image based content gets almost 40% more interaction as compared to simple text posts.
But to get the best results, you need to mix up your updates with a combination of text only, text+image and image/video only updates. For ecommerce stores, product images get the highest engagement.

6. Run Targeted Facebook Advertisements

There’s no better paid advertisement mode for ecommerce stores than Facebook advertisements. Facebook Ads have improved drastically over the last couple of years. They’re not only much simpler to configure but also bring much more targeted results as compared to other advertisement modes. You can target users based on their location, interests, gender, like/dislikes, recent activity, pages liked and dozens of other criteria. Start with a small budget of around $50 and test different ads to see what works well for you. Once you understand how it works, increase your budgets gradually.

7. Simplify the Buying Process

One important thing is to make the payment and buying process as simple as possible for your customers. Normally ecommerce stores add a link to the product pages with their Facebook status updates. There’s nothing wrong in doing this, but since it involves multiple redirections, there are high chances that buyers would abandon the purchase mid-way through. A smart option is to use a direct link to the checkout page or, even better, use a Facebook app to accept payments directly on Facebook. There are several Facebook ecommerce store apps where you can configure your products for direct selling on Facebook.

8. Use Facebook for Customer Support

A great way to show your fans and prospective buyers that you care about them, is to move the customer support to your Facebook page. Ask users to share their product feedback, compliments/complaints and concerns of your Facebook page. Actively respond to such comments, and ensure quick problem resolution. This will show the world that you really care about your customers.

9. Use a Combination of Manual and Automated Posts

Most ecommerce stores serve customers belonging to multiple countries, due to which they need to operate in different time zones. Of course you can’t stay on Facebook all the time. So it’s recommended that you automate some of your posts to stay in touch with customers from all time zones. You can use the BufferApp or HootSuite for this purpose. But keep posting manually as well.
Research shows that the engagement levels are 18% higher on Thursday and Friday, and 32% higher on weekends. Every day, around 1PM gets the most shares and 3PM gets the most clicks. Keep these time slots and days in mind while scheduling your automated posts.

Conclusion

Like any other social network, Facebook thrives on user engagement. The more closely you engage your audience through high quality visual content, contests and comment responses, the more action you’d be able to drive from them. But remember that your goal is to route users from your Facebook page to your store, because that is where you can convert them into subscribers – your biggest online asset.

5 Factors That Prevent the Growth of Your Online Business

When you started your online business, you didn’t intend to keep tapping in one place. You probably started small, but you planned to work towards indefinite progress. At some point, when you took a look at the quarterly report, you realized that the growth wasn’t happening. Can you define the reasons for such state?

The online world gives you immense opportunities for business growth. Billions of people are online at this moment. That means you have a great chance to attract your target audience, but you also face huge competition that won’t let you succeed that easily. When it comes to turning leads into customers, you have to try something different than everyone else. Maybe uniqueness is where you fail?

There are five possible factors that may prevent the growth of your online business. Many guides and tips promise you to make a difference, but you won’t notice any progress if you don’t analyze your mistakes first. Go through the following list and think about your actions. When you become aware of your flaws, it will be easy for you to fix them.
You Are Dependent Upon Your Social Media Presence

It’s nice to use social media for the sake of business growth. You communicate with your audience, you get comments and constructive criticism, and you present your new products and services in front of potential customers. Establishing strong social media presence is a business strategy that always work, but you cannot base your entire marketing efforts on it.

If you’ve been neglecting the necessary website improvements before you get all you need through social media, then you’re making a big mistake. There is only one proper way for an online business to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social platforms: as media that attract potential buyers and direct them towards the main website. That’s where the magic happens – your website. Do not focus too much on social media. If you invest too much time on maintaining these platforms, you’ll forget about the main purpose of your online business.

Read: The 30 minute Social media workout for Every marketers.
You’re Getting Too Inspired By Industry Leaders

The reason for analyzing industry leaders is to learn from their strategies and implement them in a unique way that’s appropriate for your own online business. You should not copy them! No customer would like to do business with someone who copies an established brand; they wouldn’t choose you over the leaders if you don’t offer something new.

The only way to attract potential customers is to gain their trust. When you analyze the leaders in your industry, use that data as a guiding point, but do not turn your own business into a clone.
You’re Trying Too Hard to Look Like an Expert

If you’re following the example of real industry experts, you might think it would be wise to leave an impression as an arrogant, unavailable person. Yes, such reputation works for well-established industry leaders who don’t have time to build connections with regular customers. Don’t play that game! If the customers don’t feel like they can communicate with you, they won’t like your business. Don’t place yourself on a pedestal; that’s a certain way of repelling your potential clients.

Your priority should be building a proper connection with your audience.

Let’s say you’re looking at TripAdvisor reviews for Cuban hotels. You’re considering two options: both of them have many reviews, but the manager of one of those hotels responded to the comments and promised to take the remarks into consideration. You would surely choose the hotel with more accessible management, wouldn’t you?

You can be an expert everyone feels close to! Expose yourself to public opinion and be as accessible as possible. Respond to online comments and do everything to make your customers happy! That’s the type of leader everyone wants to do business with.
You’re Not Doing Enough to Boost Your Website’s Traffic

You own an online business. Its success depends upon the traffic you attract at your website. You can build perfectly organized pages with the right color scheme and tons of information your customers need. That won’t do you any good if you don’t have a traffic-building strategy.

Everyone loves podcasts these days. Try to get interviewed by a popular host, and you’ll attract many visits the same day of its publication. Publish press releases and gain authority by maintaining an awesome blog. Build strong connections with influential bloggers and get your links featured in their posts. Offer free products/services to people willing to share their reviews with the online community. Do everything to attract more audience at your website!

Your Strategies Are Outdated

Technology evolves at a fast pace. If you can’t keep up with the new trends, your online business will definitely suffer the consequences. The strategies that worked for ages may not be effective in the current online setting. E-mail marketing is a classic, but maybe you’re sending old-fashioned lines that no longer work? Maybe you are publishing lengthy articles that used to be a synonym of expertise, but are not attractive for today’s readers with short attention span?

Remember: old-fashioned strategies won’t lead your business towards growth. You need to base your online presence upon contemporary techniques that today’s Internet users appreciate. Most of all, you need to focus on direct and casual, but professional communication with your audience. Bring something new to the table; the most important thing is to be unique!
If Your Online Business Is Not Growing, You Need to Make a Change!

The moment you become aware of the slow or nonexistent online business growth, you need to focus on making changes that will push it forward. Everyone makes mistakes. Some business owners are successful because they recognize them on time and they know how to fix them.

There are tons of opportunities in the online space, but the business environment is not as welcoming as it once was. You need to do your part of the work. Make the necessary changes, and your business will start growing.

How’s your online business doing? Are you growing or stagnant? Let us know in the comment section below. And if you enjoyed this article, do share it in your network.

By default SEMrush desktop/bot is selected for crawling & you can change it with Google desktop or mobile bot. I prefer selecting Google bot & suggest you the same, as it’s better to see the SEO report from Google search engine perspective.

social media email report
At this time, their Social media reporting tool supports above mentioned reporting. Your goal is to always get the green mark in your weekly report. Here is the report from ShoutMeLoud social media channels:
Social media report
What I like here is comprehensive detail on everything including number of updated & engagement. Especially if you have a close competitor, you can get vital data like how often they are updating their social media account & you can make a strategy based on solid data.
Since this tool is in beta, I would like to see few more features in their report.
  • Youtube integration: In their supported social media tool, having Youtube would make a real difference. These days all the bloggers are quite active with video blogging & Youtube is the idle choice of all. I have earlier mentioned about VidIQwhich is for Youtube users & having that kind of data (Data shown by VidIQ) would make SEMrush social media feature the first choice among video bloggers.
  • Suggestion to improve engagement: A suggestion to optimize your social media account based on competitor report would be useful for newbies.
SEO Ideas: (You will love this)
This is a holy-grail for bloggers who understand the importance of keyword optimization. I believe most of the SEO-savvy bloggers do & SEO ideas feature can do real wonder for them. The SEO Ideas tool simplifies the tasks associated with webpage optimization. By auditing your landing pages that appear in Google SERPs and comparing them to your competitors pages for the same keywords, SEMrush can give you recommendations for your optimization strategy and keyword targeting that may improve your Search Engine ranking.
Check SEO optimization of a page

The coolest factor is; it automatically pulls up landing pages with keyword based on your position checker settings. I have mentioned about Keyword position checker in the next section. This tool analyses the top 10 pages ranking for the same keyword (in Google) & suggest you changes to improve the ranking. For backlink building, you get suggestion for domains from where you should try acquire the backlink for higher ranking. Here is an example of SEO ideas report page:

Keyword ranking tracker
What I like most about this feature is the ability to add keywords directly from Google analytics or SEMrush. This will help you to quickly add keywords for position tracking.
In the below image you can see that keywords are picked from Google Analytics account. Sandbox area is where suggested keywords are shown & you can add or remove keywords.
